FM27 4-3-3 gegenpress: the front foot
Aggressive, compact and built to win the ball high — as long as the holding midfielder stays connected to the back four.

The $4-3-3 DM in one minute
The press is a chain, not a sprint. The striker angles the first pass, the wingers jump the full-backs and the holding midfielder covers the central outlet.
For athletic squads with the stamina to repeat sprints and a goalkeeper comfortable off the line.
Strong sides that should dominate territory and can rotate in midfield.
The shape
The two No.8s play ahead of the holder, but neither should be level with the striker when the press is triggered. The far-side winger tucks in to close the switch.
Avoid judging the shape from the formation graphic alone. In FM27, the positions that matter are the ones your players occupy after the first pass. Watch whether the rest defence holds and whether the attacking runs occupy different zones.

Roles and duties
These are the starting roles. The key attributes listed are the qualities to prioritise when recruiting or developing a player for the job. A lower-league squad may need simpler duties; an elite squad can handle more specialist roles.
| Slot | Role & duty | Prioritise |
|---|---|---|
| GK | Sweeper Keeper Attack | Rushing out, passing, composure |
| RB | Wing-Back Attack | Stamina, work rate, crossing |
| RCB | Ball-Playing Defender Defend | Pace, passing, anticipation |
| LCB | Central Defender Defend | Pace, positioning, marking |
| LB | Wing-Back Support | Stamina, off the ball, tackling |
| DM | Defensive Midfielder Defend | Positioning, tackling, composure |
| RCM | Box-to-Box Midfielder Support | Stamina, work rate, passing |
| LCM | Mezzala Attack | Off the ball, dribbling, vision |
| RW | Inverted Winger Attack | Dribbling, finishing, acceleration |
| LW | Inside Forward Attack | Off the ball, finishing, pace |
| ST | Pressing Forward Attack | Work rate, stamina, anticipation |
Role suitability is not the only test. Tactical Understanding and Player Buy In can still lower the effectiveness of a player who looks perfect on paper.
Team instructions
In possession
- Slightly shorter passing and standard tempo
- Fairly narrow width to keep the rest-defence compact
- Play out of defence only if the goalkeeper is a capable passer
- Counter-press is already aggressive; do not add extreme overlap at the same time
In transition
- Counter-press immediately after a loss
- Counter when the ball is won in the attacking third
- Roll the keeper quickly to a centre-back if the first pass is not on
Out of possession
- High defensive line and high block
- Trigger press much more often
- Stop crosses at source; force play inside into the midfield screen
Start with the base instructions. Add optional team or player instructions only after the Tactical Understanding gauge has stabilised. More instructions mean more complexity, not guaranteed control.
Attacking box runs
FM27’s new Player Instructions let you shape how players attack the penalty area. The goal is not to fill every zone; it is to make sure your runners do not occupy the same one. Start with these combinations:
| Player | Instruction |
|---|---|
| ST | Press the centre-back toward his weaker side; cut the pass into midfield. |
| RW | Stay wider in possession, then jump the full-back when the press trigger appears. |
| LCM | Get further forward and attack the far post when the right side is isolated. |
| DM | Close down less — hold the central pocket in front of the centre-backs. |
Training the tactic
A tactic only becomes effective when the players understand it, believe in it and have the physical capacity to deliver it. This weekly structure prioritises the behaviours the shape depends on.
Early week — endurance base
Use physical and endurance work after recovery. High-press football fails when the second sprint disappears at 70 minutes.
Midweek — pressing coordination
Train your defensive shape and pressing triggers together. The striker and wide players must move as one unit.
Pre-match — rest defence
A short tactical session on rest defence and set-piece positioning. Keep total intensity moderate.
Individual — finishing and composure
The press creates chaos, not clean chances. Keep your forwards on finishing work.

Matchday tweaks
Tactical Tweaks are reactions, not a second tactic. Change one thing at a time and give the game time to respond. These are the situations this system is most likely to need:
| Trigger | Adjustment |
|---|---|
| Opponent beats the first press repeatedly | Reduce the press, drop the line one notch and keep the DM home. |
| You are chasing the game | Add more urgency and send an extra runner into the box; accept the counter-risk. |
| Opposition has a deep-lying playmaker | Use tighter marking on him and ask the pressing forward to screen the return pass. |
The weakness to protect
A direct 4-4-2 can bypass the press with a diagonal into the channel. Lower the defensive line if your centre-backs cannot defend those sprints.
Every shape has a trade-off. The job is not to remove all risk; it is to make sure the risk is deliberate and the squad is prepared for it. These are the attributes that make this tactic more reliable:
- Stamina across the front five
- Centre-back recovery pace
- Goalkeeper sweeping
- Pressing forward anticipation
If the tactic is underperforming, first check condition, tactical understanding and whether players are in their preferred roles. A single tired full-back can break the entire structure of an aggressive shape.
FM27 $4-3-3 DM FAQ
Does gegenpressing still work in FM27?
It can, but the match engine now places more weight on realistic acceleration, stamina and defensive jockeying. Test the press in pre-season rather than switching it on for every match.
Is a high defensive line essential?
Not essential. A high press with a standard line is often more stable for a mid-table squad. The line should match your defenders’ pace, not your ambition.
Why is the DM on Defend?
The holding midfielder is your insurance against the first pass out of the press. He should cover the central lane while the No.8s hunt the ball.
